ARTIST STATEMENT
"I feel a deep, spiritual connection with the stones and materials I use in my work. I have gained a great deal of personal satisfaction over the years transforming rough agate, jasper or turquoise into beautiful finished stones, then designing unique pieces of jewelry around them. Living in New Mexico for most of my life provided me with an appreciation and understanding of the complexities of the desert. The intensity of sandstone cliffs at sunset, or the incredible textures of the southwestern landscape; these images feel so much like a part of who I am. It is the essence of these elements that I strive to integrate into my work.
For several years I lived in northern Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Both of my children were born there. I began my journey as a metal smith there. It feels as if a large part of me will forever be bound to "the Rez". I met some very inspiring people there. I have many vivid memories of that time. Working on my own in the studio, completely alone with my thoughts, I harnessed all of my creative energy as I sharpened my skills. This was a time of intense, personal growth as I undertook the many challenges of balancing fatherhood with my work as an artist.
I have no interest in creating trendy jewelry. I strive to make jewelry that moves people. It is my love of the earth, stones and all things natural that I want people to feel when they view my work. It is the relationship between stones and precious metals that drive my designs. I continue to create from my heart and soul as I always have. I am constantly inspired by the world around me; I awake each day happy that I am here, and that I was given this gift. Nothing makes me happier than when one of my pieces finds its owner."
